About the Program
Girls Who Code is a 5-week introductory coding program designed specifically for elementary school girls. Running from January through February 2026, the program introduced students to the fundamentals of computer science using Scratch — a visual, block-based programming platform that makes coding fun and accessible.
Over the course of the program, participants learned core programming concepts including variables, loops, if-else statements, operators, and sensing blocks. By the final week, each student built her own original Scratch project that incorporated all of these concepts.
The program was organized and led by Kelly Nie, founder and president of Inspiration Learning, alongside 8 high school student volunteers who designed the curriculum, taught each weekly session, and provided hands-on help to every participant. A family showcase at the end of the program let students share their projects with parents and guardians — a proud moment for everyone involved.
What They Learned
Variables
Storing and using data to make programs interactive and dynamic.
Loops
Repeating actions efficiently to build complex behaviors.
If-Else Statements
Teaching programs to make decisions based on cause and effect.
Final Project
Each girl built an original Scratch game or animation using all she learned.
